A GERMAN 'MENSUR' ACADEMIC FENCING SWORD W/ PHOTO, 1928 - A German academic fencing sword (akademisches fechten) belonging to Dr. Hanns Lunz, including a photograph of him holding this very sword. The basket of the sword is engraved with the inscription 'Karl Martin FC! 5./16. Bundesbruder Dr. Hanns Lunz FC! 21. 9. 1928' and another large monogram 'FC!'. The basket of the sword is lined with a black, red, and white felt insert representing the German flag. Academic Fencing, also known as Mensur, has been popular in Germany for hundreds of years, with this particular style arising during the 19th century and continuing into the modern day. The scars associated with these duels became a badge of honor, with many photographs of high-ranking Germans of the 19th and 20th centuries showing long scars on the face. The association between these scars and German leaders is exemplified in the character of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the most famous Bond villain. Germany, c. 1928.
