AN ENGLISH SWORD, 1820, GEORGE IV BY JAMES PROSSER - A British infantry officer’s sword, specifically a George IV-era officer’s levee or dress sabre, dating from the 1820s–1830s, manufactured by Prosser of London, a prestigious cutler to the British monarchy. The blade is curved, single-edged with a wide fuller and detailed etching: crown over ”GR” (George Rex) IV, the reign of George IV (1820–1830), and floral motifs and arms. Marked ”Prosser / to the King / London”. The guard is gilt brass with a lion’s head pommel and folding side guard; it features a crowned GR cipher. The grip is wire-bound leather, intact. The scabbard and blade are both marked: ”PROSSER / MANUFACTURER TO HIS MAJESTY / LONDON”. This refers to James Prosser, a prominent London sword cutler known for crafting high-quality presentation and service swords for the aristocracy and British officers. He held royal warrants under George IV, William IV, and Queen Victoria. Condition: The blade: etching is still clearly legible, including royal cypher ”GR IV” and “PROSSER / to the KING / London”, excellent for age. Hilt and guard: gilt brass with lion head pommel and folding guard featuring the royal cipher. Gilding is partially worn, but the details on the guard and pommel are still sharp.
