AN ITALIAN COURT SWORD, THE ORDER OF SAINT MAURICE AND LAZARUS - An Italian court sword (Spada da Parata) of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, Kingdom of Italy, late 19th to early 20th century. The blade is long, straight, and double-edged with a central ridge, typical of dress swords, designed strictly for ceremonial purposes. The grip has two ribbed mother-of-pearl scales, fitted between gilt brass ferrules. The guard is ornately cast in gilt brass, with a knuckle bow featuring decorative bosses, including a lion’s head medallion and a lion-head pommel and stylized guard terminals. The cross of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus is prominently displayed on the guard plate, surrounded by laurel wreath motifs. The scabbard is black leather with gilt brass mounts. The throat and drag are decorated with floral and classical designs. Two suspension rings for wear with a court dress belt. The drag (chape) features finely detailed casting, likely hand-finished. Insignia & Order: The four-pointed cross in the center of the guard identifies this as a sword of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, a dynastic order of the House of Savoy, awarded for civil and military merit. This sword would have been worn by knights or officers of the order during official state ceremonies or royal audiences.
