A U.S. FEDERALIST-ERA MILITIA OFFICER'S SWORD, CA. 1795–1815 - American Federal-period militia officer’s eagle-head sword, ca. 1795–1815. The blade is straight, narrow, and etched with military and patriotic motifs, including a federal eagle, trophies of arms, and a cast eagle-head pommel, a hallmark of early U.S. swords, symbolizing American patriotism post-Revolutionary War. The forte of the blade is engraved 'Philadelphia' to one side, and initials 'W. H. H. J.' to the other. The detailing on the eagle’s beak and head is consistent with Philadelphia makers. Grip is ribbed bone, a common material on higher-end officer swords of the early republic. Guard is a D-knuckle guard and quillons with floral or neoclassical motifs, often found on swords imported from or inspired by European (especially English and German) designs but fitted for the American market. Grip is intact with typical age-related wear or yellowing. Hilt and fittings with some wear, but the detail on the eagle-head and knuckle bow is crisp.
