A PAINTED TERRACOTTA BUST OF A WOMAN WITH AN INSECT - A finely modeled and polychrome-painted terracotta bust of a young woman with delicate features and downcast eyes, her hair arranged in a low chignon secured with a ribbon. The figure is shown emerging from a rustic, naturalistic base resembling tree bark and rocks, upon which rests a realistically modeled insect (likely a beetle), adding a whimsical and symbolic touch. The bust is signed in the clay, Scotte, at the lower right, and bears impressed numbers to the reverse. The sculptor Scotte was active in France during the late 19th century, producing decorative terracotta busts and figures in the Naturalist and early Art Nouveau taste. His works often featured youthful women rendered with refined, idealized features, combined with symbolic or playful natural elements such as insects, flowers, and rustic bases. Minor surface abrasions and expected firing imperfections commensurate with age. No visible structural cracks or repairs; base with small scattered chips. Presents well with attractive coloration and patina.
