Item Overview
Description:
A fine pair of portrait miniatures on ivory, executed in watercolor and gouache, each in a rectangular ebonized wood frame with oval gilt-metal surround. The portraits depict a young gentleman in a blue coat with gilt buttons, a yellow waistcoat, and a white cravat, and a lady with dark hair arranged in the fashionable style of the 1830s, wearing a green shawl and a necklace with a pendant jewel. Both works are signed and dated Carl Mayor, 1832.
Each inscribed/signed Carl Mayor, 1832. The reverse with old collection stamps, including Muzeul de Arta, Romania.
Carl Mayor (1798–1868) was an accomplished 19th-century miniature painter active in Central Europe, particularly noted for his finely detailed likenesses of bourgeois and aristocratic sitters. His portraits display a keen sensitivity to physiognomy and period costume, making them valuable records of early Romantic portraiture.
