A LIMOGES HAND-PAINTED PORCELAIN CABINET PLATE, SIGNED NOUSTRE, LATE 19TH CENTURY - Of scalloped circular form with a cobalt blue ground, richly embellished with tooled gilt scrollwork along the rim, framing a finely painted central reserve. The scene depicts reclining classical maidens attended by putti, executed in soft pastel tones with delicate shading, signed lower right Noustre. Underside with green overglaze Limoges mark “Limoges France, ” impressed decorator’s mark, and additional red inscriptions including Plafond du Louvre 66.93, suggesting the painted subject was after a French academic composition, likely inspired by ceiling decorations in the Louvre. Also bearing the retailer’s mark S. Prouvat, Limoges. Plates of this type, combining Limoges manufacture with signed miniature-style painting after French academic or Rococo compositions, were popular cabinet and display wares circa 1880–1900.
