A SIGNED JAPANESE BRONZE FIGURE OF A MUSICIAN, MEIJI PERIOD (1868–1912) - The finely cast bronze figure depicts a young Japanese woman walking, her posture lively and dynamic, dressed in a traditional kimono with tied obi, raised sandals, and a wide straw hat shielding her from the sun. She carries a biwa (lute) tucked under one arm, suggesting she is a street or festival musician. The figure stands upon a naturalistic base, well-patinated with deep brown tones. The underside bears an incised signature in a rectangular cartouche. Figures of musicians, dancers, and street performers were a popular subject among Meiji-era bronze artists, produced both for the domestic market and for export to the West. The present example shows careful modeling in the folds of the kimono and a sensitive rendering of the youthful face, with traces of Western influence in the naturalistic style.
