Item Overview
Description:
Finely cast bronze figure of a lady in a traditional kimono, depicted in a graceful forward-leaning pose, holding up the hem of her garment with one hand while her other arm rests at her side. Her hair is arranged in a traditional coiffure, and her face bears a serene, naturalistic expression. The surface is finished in a rich dark-brown patina with subtle variations enhancing the folds of the robe and the delicate modeling of the features. Mounted on an integral base with an incised signature and an applied seal mark.
Figures of elegant women were a popular subject for Meiji-period bronze sculptors, reflecting both domestic artistic traditions and the growing export market to Europe. The fine modeling of the drapery and naturalistic treatment of the face suggest the work of a skilled workshop.
