Description:
Of tall ovoid form with short-waisted neck and flaring rim, the dark brown patinated bronze body delicately worked in low relief and gilt with an atmospheric scene: a crescent moon rising above a gnarled willow tree, its drooping branches reaching toward a solitary bat in flight. The design is rich in auspicious symbolism: the bat (fuku) signifying happiness and good fortune, the willow symbolizing resilience and renewal, and the moon representing serenity and enlightenment.
The base is inscribed with the artist’s signature in kanji: 五郎三郎 (Goro Masaburo).
Provenance: Private collection, United States.
Footnote: Meiji period bronzes of this type were highly prized both in Japan and in the export market, embodying the fusion of Japanese aesthetic minimalism with technical mastery. The restrained use of negative space combined with delicately applied motifs reflects the artistry of the late 19th-century metalworker.
