A JAPANESE BRONZE ARCHAISTIC VASE, BY MIMINZŌ - A JAPANESE BRONZE ARCHAISTIC VASE, BY MIMINZŌ. Japan, Meiji period (late 19th–early 20th century). Of archaistic gu form inspired by Chinese ritual bronzes, cast with a flaring trumpet neck above a waisted midsection and splayed foot. The body is decorated in low relief with archaic-style panels containing stylized taotie masks, dragon motifs, and geometric borders, all enriched with a textured surface imitating ancient bronzeware patina. Applied with two vertical tubular handles to the midsection. Mark: Incised rectangular seal to the base reading 美明造 (Miminzō), ”Made by Miminzō.” Footnote: The Meiji era saw a flourishing of archaistic bronzes, made by Japanese workshops emulating ancient Chinese ritual forms but with refined Japanese casting and finishing. The Miminzō workshop (美明造), though less documented than larger foundries, is known for high-quality export bronzes and vessels with archaic designs. This example is a fine representation of cross-cultural artistic dialogue in Meiji Japan, balancing reverence for Chinese antiquity with Japanese technical mastery.
