A JAPANESE SATSUMA VASE, MEIJI PERIOD, LATE 19TH CENTURY - Of ovoid form with everted rim, finely hand-painted in polychrome enamels and gilt with a continuous scene of pheasants in flight and on the ground among reeds, before a full moon rendered in soft shading. The neck is decorated with roundels of brocade-style mons on a black ground, the foot and rim with gilt foliate borders. Signed to the body with a gilt and black inscription. Raised on a carved hardwood stand. The naturalistic depiction of pheasants in moonlit reeds is a classic Meiji-era motif, symbolizing autumn and seasonal abundance. The delicate shading and fine line work, combined with brocade-style gilt roundels, are typical of high-quality Satsuma ware destined for export during the late 19th century.
