A LOT OF TWO UNUSUAL JAPANESE SATSUMA VASES, MEIJI PERIOD - A LOT OF TWO UNUSUAL JAPANESE SATSUMA VASES. Japan, Meiji period, late 19th century. Each is finely decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt over a crackled cream ground, with alternating reserves of figural and bird-and-landscape scenes framed within geometric and floral brocade patterns. The first, globular in form, depicts peasant figures carrying bundles and various birds among foliage; the second, of tapering cylindrical form, shows birds in flight, floral panels, and small figural cartouches, all set against bold geometric motifs in brown, green, and blue glazes.
