Item Overview
Description:
AN AMERICAN DECORATED SATSUMA-STYLE VASE WITH COVER, SIGNED CHARLOTTE S. MACKENZIE, DATED 1921
Of baluster form with twin gilt-scroll handles and domed cover, the body finely hand-painted in polychrome enamels with stylized floral medallions framed by blue and gilt borders, the foot and lid decorated with complementary floral sprays and gilt accents. The lid is surmounted by a gilt knop finial. The underside is inscribed in gold script, "Charlotte S. MacKenzie / 1921."
While inspired by Japanese Satsuma ware, this vase is an American art pottery piece, decorated by hand and signed by Charlotte S. MacKenzie.
Early 20th-century American ceramics frequently adopted Asian motifs, especially during the Japonisme and Arts & Crafts movements.
