A JAPANESE SATSUMA VASE WITH A SAMURAI SCENE - A JAPANESE SATSUMA VASE WITH A SAMURAI SCENE. Japan, Meiji period (late 19th century). Of ovoid form with flared rim, finely decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt over a crackled cream ground. The body is painted with continuous figural panels depicting elaborately dressed samurai and attendants in a garden setting beneath blossoming trees, alternating with floral reserves of chrysanthemums and scrolling foliate motifs.
