A PAIR OF CHINESE CARVED ROOT FIGURES, LATE QING DYNASTY - A PAIR OF CHINESE CARVED ROOT FIGURES Late Qing Dynasty or Republic Period (circa 19th–early 20th century). Each figure is finely carved from natural rootwood, ingeniously incorporating the organic twists and textures of the wood into the robes, limbs, and facial features. The pair depicts long-bearded immortals or sages with expressive faces and raised arms, standing atop gnarled root bases. The sculptor skillfully merged the natural irregularities of the root into symbolic forms, creating a sense of animated movement. Dark brown patina throughout. Notes: Root carving (根雕, gendiao) has long been prized in China as a literati art form, valued for its spontaneous incorporation of natural forms into Daoist or Buddhist imagery. Figures such as these were often displayed in scholars’ studios as symbols of wisdom, immortality, and harmony with nature. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
