Bidspirit auction | A BLACK FOREST EAGLE CARVING

A BLACK FOREST EAGLE CARVING - Superbly hand-carved Black Forest figural group depicting two eagles engaged in a dramatic encounter, perched upon and around a naturalistic tree trunk and root base. Executed with remarkable attention to detail, the carving captures the lifelike plumage, outstretched wings, and sharp beaks of the raptors in dynamic motion. The base incorporates the natural form of the wood, blending seamlessly into the composition and enhancing the rugged Alpine aesthetic typical of Black Forest craftsmanship. The sculpture exemplifies the traditional carving skills of the Brienz region of Switzerland, known for its large-scale animal carvings, often produced for the Grand Tour market. Works of this scale and subject were particularly prized during the late 19th century and frequently displayed in hunting lodges or as statement pieces in Continental interiors.
