Bidspirit auction | A BELGIAN OIL ON CANVAS
A BELGIAN OIL ON CANVAS HARBOR SCENE, SIGNED CORNELIUS, DATED 1889 - A finely executed late 19th-century oil on canvas depicting a bustling harbor scene, with fishing vessels battling choppy waters before the city skyline of Antwerp. The Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal) dominates the background, its Gothic spire rising above the rooftops, while the foreground is animated by small boats braving turbulent waters. The artist, Cornelius, demonstrates exceptional handling of light and atmosphere, contrasting the drama of the sea with the architectural clarity of the Flemish cityscape. Signed and dated lower right, Cornelius, ’89. Retains its original keyed stretcher with pine strainer and corner wedges visible on the verso. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
