A DUTCH WINTER SCENE, LATE 19TH CEN. - A finely painted Dutch School oil on canvas, late 19th century, depicting a bustling winter village scene. The composition shows a snow-covered landscape with red brick houses, a gabled church tower, and a wooden bridge extending over a frozen waterway. Figures are actively engaged across the ice, skaters, townsfolk, and a man pushing a sleigh—contributing to the lively character of the work. At the left foreground, a rider on horseback converses with a standing woman near a rustic house, while beyond can be glimpsed a windmill and distant village structures under a dramatic sky. The artist’s handling of atmospheric effects, pink-lavender twilight clouds contrasting with cool blue ice and snow, recalls the Dutch Romantic revival of 19th-century landscape painting in the manner of Andreas Schelfhout (1787–1870) and his followers.
