ATTR TO GEORGE INNESS (1825–1894) LANDSCAPE AT SUNSET OIL ON BOARD PAINTING - An intimate Tonalist landscape, traditionally attributed to George Inness, one of the most influential American painters of the 19th century. The composition captures the dramatic effects of twilight, with tangled tree silhouettes set against a luminous, fiery sky. The palette of glowing ochres and deep shadow, combined with vigorous brushwork, reflects Inness’s mature spiritual style, in which natural forms dissolve into atmospheric harmonies to evoke a sense of the divine in nature. The work is executed on an artist’s board and presented in a richly ornamented period giltwood frame with rope-twist and reeded decoration. A presentation plaque inscribed GEORGE INNESS is affixed to the lower rail. The reverse reveals original wood battens and aged surface consistent with late-19th-century practice. Oil on cardboard, mounted within a wooden strainer. Painting: 10.6 x 7.8 in., (27 x 20 cm.). Framed: 18.8 x 16.5 in., (47.7 x 42 cm.). Please make all inquiries before bidding.
