A FRENCH GILT BRONZE-MOUNTED WHITE ONYX VASE, LATE 19TH CENTURY - Of campana form, the white onyx body with twin acanthus-cast handles, mounted with beaded and leaf-tipped gilt-bronze rims, raised on a spreading foot and stepped square plinth with richly cast foliate and anthemion friezes, supported on four toupie feet. The stone body has natural veining and warm coloration. This type of work was produced in Paris in the Louis XVI revival style, often during the second half of the 19th century, when onyx and gilt bronze garnitures became fashionable in both mantel garnitures and stand-alone decorative vases. Comparable examples appear in French decorative arts auctions and can vary widely depending on the quality of the mounts and onyx. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
