A FRENCH GILT-BRONZE CARTEL CLOCK, JAPY FRÈRES, 19TH CENTURY - Of Louis XVI revival design, the cast gilt-bronze case surmounted by an urn finial with applied swags, flanked by foliate finials, and decorated with scrolling acanthus and laurel leaf pendants. The central section with pierced latticework and rocaille ornament above a foliate terminal. White enamel circular dial with Roman numerals and Arabic outer minutes, pierced gilt hands. The twin-train movement stamped JAPY FRÈRES & CIE / MEDAILLE D’HONNEUR, with bell strike on the hour and half-hour. Footnote: Japy Frères, one of the foremost French clockmaking firms of the 19th century, received numerous medals of honor at international exhibitions. Their cartel clocks, produced in the Louis XVI style, were popular among the Parisian bourgeoisie and remain highly collectible. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
