Of typical banjo form in veneered mahogany with swan-neck pediment and central brass finial, the instrument comprising five registers: hygrometer, alcohol thermometer with scale from “Freezing” to “Blood Heat, ” convex mirror, 10-inch silvered barometer dial engraved with laurel wreath decoration and calibrated 28–31 inches with indications Stormy to Very Dry, and a signed spirit level at the base. H. Cattaneo is recorded as a scientific instrument maker working in York in the early 19th century, producing fine quality stick and wheel barometers for the regional gentry.
