A JOHN BERNARD FLANNAGAN (1895-1942) SIGNED MARBLE RABBIT - A finely crafted marble sculpture by American artist John Bernard Flannagan (1895-1942) depicting an art-deco stylized rabbit mid leap. Flannagan, born in Fargo, North Dakota in 1895, was a brilliant but troubled artist. His father having passed when he was only 5, and his mother being unable to care for him, he was put into an orphanage at a young age. in 1914 he began attending the Minneapolis School of Art, now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, until 1917 when the US entered WW1 and he joined the Merchant Marines. He remained there until 1922 when he was hired to work on the New York farm of Arthur B. Davies, who convinced him to return to his artistic pursuits. Flannagan went on to created incredible and varied works of art over the following two decades, with a particular interest in Ireland, before eventually committing suicide, succumbing to the pain and alcoholism which had plagued him for many years.
