Description:
PIERRE-JULES MÊNE (FRENCH, 1810–1879), A GILT-BRONZE GROUP OF TWO ELK FIGHTING, MID–LATE 19TH CENTURY.
Finely cast and chased, depicting two stags in combat, their antlers locked in struggle, raised on a naturalistic oval base signed P.J. MÊNE. The surface is richly gilt, retaining detail to musculature, pelts, and textured ground.
Footnote: Pierre-Jules Mêne was one of the foremost French Animalier sculptors of the 19th century, specializing in naturalistic depictions of horses, hounds, and game animals.
