Item Overview
Description:
A gilt bronze sculpture by American animalier artist Albert Humphreys (1864–1922) depicting two lion cubs play fighting with each other. The piece is signed on the base by the artist and dated 1903.
Humphreys travelled to France for a time as a young man and studied in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexander Harrison. Upon returning to America he began working for Rookwood Pottery where he decorated imported Limoges porcelain, before eventually becoming an independent artist creating the bronze sculptures he's famous for today. His work can be found in a variety of important institutions, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., Detroit Institute of Art, and the Boston Public Library, among many others.
United States of America, 1903.
