ALEXANDER BENOIS (ATTRIBUTED), A THEATRICAL COSTUME DESIGN FOR A RUSSIAN PEASANT, EARLY 20TH CENTURY.
Gouache, watercolor, and pencil on paper, with French inscriptions such as velours and toile, indicating fabric notes. The sheet depicts a bearded male figure in a traditional Russian caftan with fur hat, gloves, and boots, his arms extended in a welcoming gesture.
Likely created for a Russian opera or theatrical production staged in Paris or Monte Carlo, in the circle of Russian émigré artists of the Ballets Russes milieu.
