Item Overview
Description:
Of circular form, the domed lid is finely decorated in pâte-sur-pâte with two putti among clouds, one holding a laurel wreath and the other garlands, reserved on a deep cobalt blue ground. The border is enriched with gilt scrollwork and foliate motifs. The sides and base are in matching cobalt blue with gilt accents. Interior glazed white.
The underside has Limoges marks in green and gold, including Limoges France and a crowned monogram, typical of early 20th-century Limoges manufacturers.
The pâte-sur-pâte technique, developed at Sèvres in the mid-19th century, was widely adopted by Limoges makers for luxury export wares. The delicate white relief decoration on a contrasting ground made these pieces highly desirable. Boxes of this quality and subject were often retailed by leading French and American firms.
