Item Overview
Description:
Of naturalistic shell and marine form, the pitcher is modeled with a scallop shell foot supporting a body with molded ridges and ruffled lip, the handle formed as a curling sea form. The body is decorated with vibrant hand-painted motifs of yellow water lilies, broad green lily pads, and fluttering butterflies and dragonflies in polychrome enamels. The shell ridges are highlighted in pink and white tones, and the interior is shaded in soft pink with a pastel blue handle.
The underside is impressed with mold number 5329 and painted with a blue crowned “RW” Rudolstadt mark (Schlegelmilch, Thuringia), used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Schlegelmilch factory in Rudolstadt, Thuringia, Germany, was known for imaginative Art Nouveau and Rococo revival ceramics, often using naturalistic shell, flora, and fauna motifs. Large, hand-painted pitchers of this type were especially popular for decorative interiors around 1890–1910.
