A CARPATHIAN HIGHLANDER (PODHALE) SILVER FOLK PENDANT WITH POLISH EAGLE, INTERWAR PERIOD (CA. 1920S–1930S) - A traditional Podhalanian (Górale) folk pendant formed as a swarga (swastika), a regional Carpathian sun-wheel and protective symbol, predating and unrelated to its later political associations. The pendant is crafted in silvered metal, the broad, angular arms framing a stylized Polish eagle applied in relief to the center. The eagle bears a heraldic shield to its chest and features rhinestones inlays along the wings, characteristic of highland folk jewelry from the Zakopane and Nowy Targ region. A suspension loop is mounted at the top for wearing on a chain or cord. This type of ornament was traditionally worn as part of a highlander's festive costume, particularly in the Tatra mountain region, where the swarga symbol was understood as a motif of strength, protection, good fortune, and solar energy. Examples of similar workmanship are associated with the Zakopane School of Applied Arts and small independent Carpathian silversmith workshops active during the interwar period. Footnote: The swarga (swastika) in this cultural context is an ancient Slavic and Carpathian folk motif used long before the mid-20th century. Condition: Surface wear and oxidation are consistent with age and handling. Some darkening and patina to the metal surfaces. Several rhinestones are present with minor dulling. Slight bending to the eagle element. No apparent structural losses.
