AN ENGLISH BLACKENED STEEL CUIRASSIER BREAST PLATE, 18TH CENTURY - A cuirassier breastplate of the mid to late 18th century, originating in England and blackened as was the custom of the time for cuirassiers throughout much of Europe. It's a characteristic form of the era, with a protruding midrib and flared base to deflect blows away from the wearer. The piece retains its attachment points, two at the shoulders and two at the sides. Under the collar on the front of the piece are the stamped initials 'AT', while under the right shoulder, there appears to be a symbol of a shield with a cross, though it is partially obscured.
