A 16TH OR 17TH CENTURY EUROPEAN STEEL ARMOR CHESTPIECE, LIKELY PISA, ITALY - A steel armor chestpiece from continental Europe, likely Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy, complete with both its breastplate and backplate. The breastplate is marked on the reverse, below the collar, with a large 'T', probably a maker's mark, in addition to a mark reading 'G.P.'. The shoulders of the armor, as well as the sides, are affixed with their original buckles, the shoulders retaining what appears to be their original leather straps. The bottom of the breastplate is affixed with brass florets from which are hung leather straps for attaching tassets or other leg protection. The style of this piece is consistent with other examples from the late 16th and early 17th century, being a transitional style from the renaissance armors of the 1500s into the early-modern styles of the 1600s. Expected pitting throughout surface. Period reinforcement on the inside. Some small spots of loss along the bottom edge. The leather straps on the bottom are later replacements. The top leather straps may be original. The back plate retains its original buckles and leather.
