A LARGE RUSSIAN ENGRAVED PARCEL-GILT SILVER SALT CELLAR - Of rounded form on a short circular foot, the exterior richly engraved with scrolling foliate ornament in the Neo-Renaissance style, interspersed with grotesque masks and ornamental strapwork between bands of stylized bead and reeded borders. The interior is finely parcel-gilt. Hallmarks: maker's mark ”Хлебниковъ” (Khlebnikov) beneath the Imperial Warrant double-headed eagle, 84 silver standard, Moscow town mark St. George slaying the dragon, assay mark ”AР”, 1888 date mark. Weight: 2.4 oz. (approx. 68 g.) Note: Khlebnikov, one of the most distinguished Imperial Russian silversmiths and suppliers to the court, was celebrated for his technical precision and ornamental richness. This salt cellar exemplifies Khlebnikov’s mastery of decorative engraving and his interest in the Renaissance-inspired ”Russian Revival” style that flourished during the reign of Alexander III.
