A LARGE RUSSIAN ENGRAVED SILVER SALT CELLAR - Of circular form with slightly everted rim, the body finely engraved with a continuous band of foliate and architectural ornament in the Old Russian taste, raised on a shaped scalloped base. The interior retains a soft, warm patina consistent with age and use. Hallmarks: three Cyrillic letters ”ДИО” , ”НС” (assayer’s mark for Nikolai Struk, active Moscow 1870s), 1872 date mark, 84 silver standard, and St. George Moscow mark. Weight: 3.6 oz. (approx. 102 g.) Silver salt cellars of this substantial size and design were typical of high-quality Moscow production in the 1870s, often presented as part of table services in the Neo-Russian style. The scalloped foot and engraved motifs recall medieval Russian ornament and church silverwork of the 17th century. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
