AN EARLY RUSSIAN SILVER EWER, 1838 - Of elegant baluster form with fluted body rising to a slender neck, the rim slightly fitted with a scroll handle of restrained classical design. A chased band of cross-hatched ornament encircles the neck. The ewer rests on a spreading circular foot. This refined vessel exemplifies early 19th-century Russian silversmithing with its harmonious proportions and understated neoclassical detailing. Hallmarks: Cyrillic maker’s mark ”IG”, assayer’s mark ”VS”, St. George slaying the dragon Moscow town mark, 84 silver standard, and 1838 date mark. Weight: 12.6 oz (357.2 g.) Note: The surface shows areas of tarnish and oxidation consistent with age; minor dents and wear to the handle. A well-preserved and finely executed example of Imperial-period Russian silver ewers.
