Bidspirit auction | A FRENCH ORMOLU AND RUBY
A FRENCH ORMOLU AND RUBY GLASS CENTERPIECE, 19TH CENTURY - A finely cast and gilded (ormolu) centerpiece supported by a seated putto figure modeled with gently animated pose and softly rounded facial features. The putto sits atop a voluted scroll support, raising one arm upward to hold the scalloped ruby glass bowl. The bowl, of rich deep red tone, is decorated with gilt vine and grape motifs around the rim and features a starburst pattern to the well. The support rests on a turned dark green marble socle and a square plinth base, the latter embellished with applied ormolu garland mounts in the neoclassical taste. The sculptural composition, with its playful mythological figure and classical architectural base, is characteristic of Parisian decorative bronzework of the mid to late 19th century, reflecting the enduring influence of Louis XVI revival and Empire-inspired ornament.
