Bidspirit auction | A FRENCH ORMOLU CENTERPIECE, 19

A FRENCH ORMOLU CENTERPIECE, 19 CENTURY H: 19 3/4 IN., (50.2 CM.,) D:11 1/8 IN., (28.2 CM.) - A finely cast and gilded bronze (ormolu) centerpiece featuring a seated youthful figure (putto or faun) modeled with lively expression and naturalistic anatomical detail. The figure is seated against a fluted neoclassical pedestal with cascading acanthus leaf drapery and rises to support a woven basket-form mount, upon which rests the original cut crystal bowl. The square stepped base is richly ornamented with laurel wreaths, ribbon-tied oak leaf swags, and classical Greek-key border molding, typical of French Empire and Neoclassical decorative vocabulary. The crystal bowl is deeply cut with faceted panels, adding a reflective brilliance that complements the warm matte and burnished gilding of the bronze. The model reflects the refined Parisian taste of mid-19th century table garnitures, likely intended as a centerpiece for fruit, confectionery, or as part of a larger garniture set.
