Bidspirit auction | AN OIL ON CANVAS BATTLE

AN OIL ON CANVAS BATTLE SCENE, ATTRIBUTED TO SCIPIONE COMPAGNO (ITALIAN, CA. 1600–AFTER 1680) - Italian School, 17th century. A dramatic and densely composed battle scene, depicting a fierce skirmish of mounted warriors amid a chaotic bridge crossing. Figures and horses clash in the foreground while others tumble from the bridge above into a darkened river below. The background opens toward a pale, turbulent sky and distant ruins, heightening the sense of movement and scale. The work demonstrates hallmarks of Scipione Compagno, a Neapolitan painter and pupil of Aniello Falcone, celebrated for his spirited depictions of battles, sieges, and architectural capriccios. His mastery of chiaroscuro and dynamic grouping lends emotional intensity to the scene, with flickering highlights illuminating the tumultuous crowd and war-torn landscape. Rendered with vigorous brushwork and tonal contrast, the painting captures the energy and theatricality characteristic of the Neapolitan Baroque. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
