Bidspirit auction | AN ITALIAN SCHOOL OLD MASTER
AN ITALIAN SCHOOL OLD MASTER PAINTING, LANDSCAPE WITH ROMAN RUINS, 17TH CEN. - A Baroque period oil on canvas painting, Capriccio of Roman ruins with figures and cattle, by an unknown Italian school artist. The artwork shows a romanticized landscape with groups of people and monumental Roman ruins in the background. During the 17th century, landscapes featuring monumental Roman ruins became a popular genre, especially among Dutch and Italian artists, who often blended real and imaginary elements to create either realistic views or ”capriccios.” Often created for wealthy Grand Tour travelers, these paintings evoked a sense of melancholy and romanticized antiquity, placing ruins in idyllic or dramatic settings.
