AN ITALIAN SCHOOL OLD MASTER PAINTING, THE VIRGIN IMMACULATE, 17TH CEN. - A Baroque period oil on canvas painting The Virgin Immaculate by an unknown artist, presumably Italian. The Virgin is depicted with a halo of stars, surrounded by clouds and putti, with God the Father extending his hand over her head. The painting is distinguished by its dynamic composition and deep, vibrant colours, characteristic of the Baroque era. One version of this canvas, created by a 17th-century Lombard painter, is kept in Bergamo, in the Church of the Blessed Virgin of Loreto. In this version, a crescent moon is depicted at the Virgin's feet, and below it, a prostrate Serpent, symbolizing the victory over original sin. Italian school, 17th century.
