ATTRIBUTED TO IPPOLITO SCARSELLA, CALLED LO SCARSELLINO (FERRARA, 1551–1620), CHRIST WITH HIS DISCIPLES ON THE MOUNT OF OLIVES - A refined and atmospheric devotional scene depicting Christ with His Disciples on the Mount of Olives, rendered with exceptional sensitivity and tonal harmony. The composition, bathed in an evening glow, conveys the meditative stillness preceding the Passion. Christ stands at the center of the composition, his gesture calm yet solemn, while the disciples rest or converse nearby amid a softly undulating landscape. Executed with Scarsellino’s characteristic lyricism, the work displays the delicate modulation of color and atmospheric light that distinguishes his late style. The fluid handling of the copper surface produces a remarkable luminosity, uniting the figures and landscape in an almost musical rhythm of form and tone. The emotional restraint and poetic sentiment reflect the refined spirituality typical of Ferrarese painting at the turn of the 17th century, linking Scarsellino to contemporaries such as Dosso Dossi and Alessandro Tiarini.
