A OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT OF A MATHEMATICIAN ATTRIBUTED TO AGOSTINO SCILLA, CA. 1620 - Attributed to Agostino Scilla, (1629 – 1700), an oil on canvas painting, a Portrait of a Mathematician. Against a brown background, slightly to the right, is a half-length portrait of a man holding a compass in his right hand and a sheet of paper with geographical divisions and numbers in his left; his head slightly tilted. Theatrically lit from above from the left, the bearded scholar's head appears thoughtful, with furrowed brows and an intrigued expression. This painting is distinguished by sharp contrasts of light and shadow, reminiscent of the works of Caravaggio (1570/71–1610). Please make all inquiries before bidding.
