A NEAPOLITAN SCHOOL, CIRCA 1630 MOSES AND THE BRONZE SERPENT, OIL ON SLATE PAINTING - A dramatic Baroque depiction of Moses and the Bronze Serpent, a subject taken from the Book of Numbers (21:4–9), where Moses raises the bronze serpent to heal the Israelites bitten by snakes. The composition captures the height of divine intervention: Moses, illuminated by divine light, gestures toward the miraculous serpent while anguished figures writhe below, their bodies convulsed in pain and redemption. Executed on slate, a support favored in 17th-century Naples for its durability and its ability to enhance the depth of chiaroscuro, the painting demonstrates a strong Caravaggesque influence with its tenebrism, vigorous anatomy, and theatrical arrangement. The style relates closely to works by artists of the Neapolitan naturalist circle, such as Jusepe de Ribera, Giovanni Battista Caracciolo (Battistello), and Andrea Vaccaro, reflecting the expressive realism and intense spirituality typical of the period.
