AN ITALIAN BAROQUE FEAST SCENE, POSSIBLY ”THE FEAST OF BELSHAZZAR” - A richly populated banquet scene depicting an opulent interior crowded with courtiers, musicians, and attendants bearing trays of gold vessels and food. The central figure, crowned and robed in red, presides at a long table laden with dishes and goblets. A young man in armor gestures dramatically toward the right foreground, while in the background, two illuminated architectural windows open onto a cityscape with spires and towers. The composition, filled with animated figures, lavish costumes, and flickering chiaroscuro, reflects the influence of the Neapolitan and Venetian Baroque schools, particularly the narrative and theatrical style associated with Antonio Zanchi (1631–1722), Francesco Solimena (1657–1747), or Giuseppe Bonito (1707–1789). The scene may represent a biblical or allegorical banquet, possibly The Feast of Belshazzar, The Wedding at Cana, or a courtly allegory of Pride and Vanity. Please make all inquiries before bidding. Dimensions: (29 × 38 1/2 in., (74 × 98 cm.) Condition: A number of small patches on the verso of the canvas, along with some dark stains. Canvas itself is strong. Painting with an even craquelure. Possibly with newer varnish. Frame is a later replacement. Stretcher appears to be original to the painting.
