Bidspirit auction | AN ITALIAN SCHOOL OIL ON

AN ITALIAN SCHOOL OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING OF THE MYSTICAL MARRIAGE OF ST. CATHERINE, 18TH CEN. - The Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, by an unknown 18th-century Italian school artist. The canvas probably belongs to the Parma school of the 18th century and is close in style to the artists Gaetano Callani (1736–1809) and Antonio Bresciani (1720–1817). Paintings of the Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine are a popular subject, especially during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The scene includes the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus, who performs the ceremony by placing a ring on Catherine's finger. Often, other saints or a chorus of angels are also present. The iconography captures the emotional intensity and spiritual intimacy of the moment. With an old paper, hand-inscribed and attached to the backside. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
