A THEODOR NETSCHER (DUTCH, 1661–1728) VERTUMNUS AND POMONA, OIL ON PANEL PAINTING - A fine Dutch Baroque oil on panel depicting the mythological lovers Vertumnus and Pomona, drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The goddess Pomona, patron of fruit and gardens, is shown seated beneath a canopy of trees, her white drapery loosely revealing her chest as the disguised god Vertumnus, wearing a turban and green robe, leans in tenderly. A cluster of grapes and pomegranates lies in her lap, symbolic of fertility and the richness of nature. Executed with soft chiaroscuro, a warm palette, and the elegant handling of drapery characteristic of Theodor Netscher, son of the celebrated portraitist Caspar Netscher, the painting exemplifies the artist’s refined intimacy and sensual realism. The subject matter, brushwork, and tonal depth suggest a late-17th-century origin, possibly created during Netscher’s period in The Hague or Paris. Signed ”Netscher” (lower right, near the fruit).
