AN OIL ON PANEL BACCHANALIAN SCENE, MONOGRAMMED ”C.P.” ATTRIBUTED TO CORNELIS VAN POELENBURGH (DUTCH, 1586–1667) - Dutch School, Late 17th century. A finely executed oil on panel depicting a Bacchanalian celebration with nude and semi-draped figures gathered around a rocky landscape, offering libations and dancing in honor of a classical deity. In the right background, a priest raises his hand toward a burning altar before a statue of a god, suggesting a ritual of devotion. Rendered in warm, golden tones and delicate chiaroscuro, the painting captures the refined style of Cornelis van Poelenburgh, a leading member of the Utrecht Caravaggisti. His characteristic treatment of luminous skin tones, atmospheric depth, and harmonious figural grouping reflects his Italianate influence derived from his years in Rome. The panel bears the monogram ”C.P.” inscribed near the altar, consistent with known autograph signatures of the artist. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
