A CAVALRY BATTLE WITH OFFICERS IN RED AND BLACK, ATTRIBUTED TO PIETER SNAYERS (FLEMISH, 17TH CENTURY) - A sweeping Flemish Baroque depiction of a cavalry skirmish on open terrain, filled with dynamic energy and detailed figuration. Officers in red and black lead their troops into the fray; a white horse rears dramatically in the foreground as soldiers clash in the smoky chaos of battle. The distant ranks and vast sky create a sense of depth and scale characteristic of the great Flemish battle painters. The composition and palette are highly reminiscent of Pieter Snayers, the Antwerp master known for his panoramic military scenes and precise rendering of uniforms, horses, and landscape. A court painter to Archduke Albert and later to the Spanish governors of the Southern Netherlands, Snayers collaborated with Peter Paul Rubens and was particularly admired for his depictions of the Thirty Years’ War and Flemish campaign scenes. The present work, with its dramatic chiaroscuro, expansive battle formation in the distance, and meticulous equestrian detail, reflects the painter’s mature manner from the mid-17th century.
