A CAVALRY BATTLE BEFORE A FORTIFIED CITY, ATTRIBUTED TO JAN VINCENTZS VAN DER VINNE (DUTCH, 17TH CENTURY) - A vivid and vigorous 17th-century depiction of a cavalry engagement before the walls of a fortified town. Armored horsemen clash in the foreground, their polished cuirasses gleaming under a stormy sky, while fallen soldiers and rearing horses heighten the drama of the composition. The painter masterfully orchestrates movement, with fluid diagonals and bursts of color the white horse at center serving as a compositional pivot. The architecture in the background and the figures’ expressive gestures recall the Haarlem school’s dynamic approach to military subjects. The work is attributed to Jan Vincentzs van der Vinne (1658–1721), son of Vincent Laurensz van der Vinne, a known member of the Haarlem Guild of St Luke. His style, influenced by both Dutch tonalism and the Italianate battle pieces of Philips Wouwerman and Palamedes Palamedesz, combines detailed figure work with strong atmospheric perspective and a restrained yet dramatic palette. Some minor signs of restoration, primarily along the borders. The canvas appears to have been relined. The surface presents stable craquelure consistent with age, and the varnish has been cleaned in the past. Frame in very good condition with light wear to gilding.
