AN OIL ON BOARD PAINTING OF SAINT PAUL BY GERARD SEGHERS, FLEMISH, 1591 - 1651 - Gerard Seghers (Flemish, 1591 - 1651), an oil on board painting of Saint Paul the Apostle writing in his prison cell. The figure of the saint is illuminated by a soft golden light, symbolizing divine guidance. Housed in an old ornate gilt wood frame with a hand-inscribed paper label attached to the reverse. Note: Gerard Seghers was a Flemish Baroque painter, art collector, and art dealer. After studying in Italy, he became a leading figure of the Flemish Caravaggisti, a movement that embraced the dramatic use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) pioneered by the Italian artist Caravaggio.
